Understanding the Financial Requirement for a UK Spouse Visa
The financial requirement is one of the most complex parts of a UK spouse visa application. This guide explains income thresholds, how to evidence your finances, and what counts towards the requirement.
The Financial Requirement Explained
To sponsor a spouse or partner's visa, the UK-based sponsor must usually show a minimum gross annual income of £38,700 per year. This threshold increases if there are children being sponsored at the same time. Government policy on this threshold can change, so always verify the current figure with a qualified solicitor before applying.
What Counts as Income?
Employment income is the most straightforward source. You can also use income from self-employment, pension income, and property rental. In some circumstances, cash savings can supplement income — you need £16,000 in savings plus £2.50 for every £1 of income below the threshold, held for at least 6 months.
