UK Sponsor Licence: A Complete Guide for Employers

14 min read18 February 2025

Want to hire international talent? You need a sponsor licence. This guide explains the A-rated and B-rated licence types, the application process, ongoing compliance duties, and how to issue Certificates of Sponsorship.

What is a Sponsor Licence?

A Sponsor Licence is a permission granted by the Home Office that allows UK businesses to employ overseas workers on the Skilled Worker route (and other work routes). Without a valid sponsor licence, you cannot sponsor foreign nationals to work in the UK.

Types of Sponsor Licence

Worker licences cover the Skilled Worker route and other employment routes. Temporary Worker licences cover routes like the Seasonal Worker Visa. Most employers apply for a Worker licence. Licences are rated A or B — A-rated sponsors are fully compliant, while B-rated sponsors are placed on an action plan to improve.
