The Complete Guide to the UK Skilled Worker Visa

12 min read15 March 2025

Everything you need to know about the Skilled Worker Visa — eligibility, salary thresholds, occupation codes, the application process, and how to maximise your chances of approval.

What is the Skilled Worker Visa?

The Skilled Worker Visa replaced the Tier 2 (General) Visa in December 2020 and is the primary route for overseas nationals to work in the UK in skilled employment. To qualify, you need a job offer from a licensed UK employer and must meet specific salary and skill-level requirements.

Key Requirements

The main requirements are: a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor, a salary of at least £38,700 (or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher), a job at or above the required skill level (RQF Level 3), and English language proficiency. Some shortage occupations attract a reduced salary threshold.

The Points System

The Skilled Worker Visa uses a points-based system. You need 70 points to be eligible. Mandatory requirements (job offer from an approved sponsor, skill level, English language) score 50 points. The remaining 20 points can be earned through salary level, shortage occupation status, or holding a PhD relevant to your role.
