10 min read5 January 2025

ILR gives you the right to live and work in the UK permanently. This guide covers eligibility, continuous residence requirements, the Life in the UK Test, English language requirements, and the application process.

What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the UK's form of permanent residency. Once granted, you have the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely without any immigration restrictions. ILR is a gateway to British citizenship for many applicants.

Qualifying for ILR

Most visa holders can apply for ILR after 5 continuous years of lawful residence in the UK. During this period, you must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period. You also need to pass the Life in the UK Test and demonstrate English language ability at B1 CEFR level or above.
