11 min read30 March 2025

Naturalisation is the most common route to British citizenship. This guide covers the eligibility criteria, the Life in the UK Test, the application process, and what happens at your citizenship ceremony.

Becoming a British Citizen

Naturalisation is the process by which eligible individuals can apply to become British citizens. It is one of the most significant milestones in an immigration journey and grants you full citizenship rights, including the right to a British passport.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for naturalisation you must: be aged 18 or over, have lived in the UK for at least 5 years (3 years if married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen), have had ILR for at least 12 months, have not spent more than 450 days outside the UK in the 5 years before your application, be of good character, and pass the Life in the UK Test.
